I was all set to move to Nyc for school because I hear it's a great place for young singles wanting to have fun and date -there is just so much to do-.
Yesterday I was at the library researching places to visit for a graduation/celebration vacation... Anyway, I came upon Fodor's Travel guide, for las vegas, 2011 edition.
I WAS BLOW AWAY!!! Las Vegas has so much to do. I thought it was all hotels, casino's, and tourist! But there is so so much more. It seems like it can be a very fun place to live.
I think there is a lot more to see in New York City than in Las Vegas. I've been to both many times and honestly I've seen everything Vegas has to offer but NYC is still a far way from getting bored with that place. If you want to go somewhere after graduation, my opinion is that you go to NYC if you can afford it. It is quite a bit more expensive to go to NYC than to Vegas but during Christmas season, Vegas hotels are just as expensive if not more than NYC hotels are strangely and it's just as hard to get into the city by plane whichever place you go. The only thing that Las Vegas has from what I saw other than hotels and casinos are some nature areas and more and more suburbs and its great if you like suburban culture and driving cars. NYC has lots of activity in arts, theatre, high end shopping, bars and many more cultural affairs than Las Vegas does.
If you want to find a girlfriend, I think you can go with either city. NYC attracts lots of young hipster women and/or serious corporate type women. Las Vegas women are suburban women so you might find more variety there.
If you want to live though, I definitely would choose NYC over Vegas. Vegas' is mostly all suburban and their winters aren't bad, you but need a car to get anywhere. The housing market in Vegas though is really bad and you might find subdivisions without anyone living in them. NYC you may not need a car if you don't want, but the house space might be small and expensive however there is lots of great quiet neighborhoods to live as well as convenience of being able to walk to anywhere you want including great parks for outdoor entertainment which Vegas doesn't really have unless you go by car to nature preserves.
Overall I would recommend you stick with New York over Las Vegas.

I would hate to live in Vegas. Outside the Strip, where few tourists venture, the place is a big ghetto. I was the victim of theft (and borderline robbery, it was complex) while waiting at the bus stop. I got a bit lost, even a few blocks away from the Strip and I didn't feel safe at all in broad daylight. I felt much safer in New York.
There really is no comparison between Las Vegas and New York City. New York City is MASSIVELY larger (think 10 times at least) with innumerably more things to do.
The only similarity is they are both 24-hour cities. But that's it.

This is something to consider, but every city has it's bad parts. I just know that the travel guide listed so many interesting things to do in Vegas besides gamble, but in New York all I really hear about are the night clubs and food... Vegas has lots of food also
This is a bit of a generalization, but New York is basically the cultural and financial center of our country and has been for 200 years. It is the iconic American city. If you want a city and you are an adverturous young person, I'd say it is a fantastic place to go.
Las Vegas definitely has some cool parts and I don't want to bash it, but comparing it to New York it comes up short in almost every conceivable category (except weather and cost of living). I'd say that you visit Vegas but move to New York (unless the cost or the weather is a deal breaker for you).

I wouldn't let a travel guide dictate your choice of cities. I am from New York and have visited Vegas 40+ times (I love Vegas!); I personally would never want to live in Vegas. New York on the other handed is the greatest city in the world, in my opinion. Daily life in Vegas is closer to that of Phoenix and other western cities than it is to NYC.
Also, if all you hear about in NYC is Night Club and Food you need to get out more and spend a weekend in the City.
Actually there are a ton of really ritzy upper class neighborhoods in Las Vegas, especially in the suburbs. (I.e. The Ridges, MacDonald Highlands, and Southern Highlands)- all of which are equally comparable to Beverly Hills, Bel Air, etc.
I still think you could have more fun In Las Vegas during a couple nights that you would in NY
in an entire week. but frankly for me Vegas gets old really quick.
