What is the best city after Chicago based on nightlife, culture, politics, and vibe of the people.

this thread assumes that everyone agrees that chicago is the best city in the midwest, which is not true.

True, not everyone agrees that Chicago is the best city in the midwest, but I think you'd find a majority of people do think the Chicago is, bar none, the premier midwestern city (myself notwithstanding). As far as runner-up, I'd say Minneapolis is in 2nd place.

Madison, WI. is one of my favorite places. It's kind of off the radar tho'. When people hear "the midwest" they think of Kansas City, St. Louis, Cleveland etc.

Why must you respond in bold?

I'll throw Minneapolis - St. Paul in the second spot.

Regardless of preference, it is obvious that Chicago is a tier above the other cities. That does not make it the best or healthiest city, but it does place it in an unfair category for comparisons sake.

As far as the original question goes, that is a tough one since many other cities exist on a similar level in the Midwest.

My take (excluding Chicago):

Nightlife - No idea really. I'm sure it's about the same for most of the larger Midwest cites.
Culture - Cleveland
Politics - Twin Cities, since it seems pretty balanced and the healthiest Midwest region (that's even if Chicago were included).
People - Pretty subjective based on where one is from. I'll say Cleveland because I'm native to that area.

I've heard many Twin Cities residents refer to Chicago as the 'big brother'.

Midwest roots, and many cultural similarities.

I'd list it as

Chicago
Detroit
Minneapolis/St. Paul
St. Louis
Cleveland
Kansas City
Milwaukee
Indianapolis
Madison
Omaha

Agree. Chicago's an outlier. Including it would for all practical purposes, skew the results to Chicago.

In my opinion:

Chicago is the best of the Midwest.

Number 2 is a toss up between Minneapolis & Detroit
