When someone says "Bay Area" I always think of San Francisco, I think it's just a bad habit considering I live in California or is it obvious? When I ask someone where they live they say " Bay Area" then I'll say " Oh you live in California" but then they get mad and say "No stupid Florida" I think he meant Tampa bay. What State/ Cities do you think of when you hear "Bay Area"?

Typically the broader SF/Oakland/San Jose area - though I have heard Tampa being called such and even some folks around here refer to the Chesepeake as such, but top of mind in the broadest context to me it would be in CA

I think of an area that has a bay in any state. I don't think Bay Area refers to just one area of a state in my opinion. Any city/cities/area that has a bay can be called the bay area. This way it doesn't sound so superficial. Just like "the city" can refer to any city, not just one, but generally speaking, most think of Frisco, San Jose and Oakland as the Bay Area.

my two cents

The Bay Area IS SF/Oakland/San Jose. When people just say "The Bay Area" in a national context that is no doubt what they mean. You hear it on TV all the time.

Tampa Bay is "Tampa Bay Area" or you hear "Chesepeake Bay". Anywhere in the country, if you say "I was in the Bay Area" or just "The Bay" people usually assume SF/Oakland/SJ

When I did a yahoo search for "the bay area", the first 8 results were for San Francisco (specifically, not Oakland or San Jose), and the 9th was for Tampa.

Obviously SF is the larger of these two, so it is probably the first to come to mind for most people.

Houston has a Bay Area too.

Galveston Bay Area is one of the largest in the US with a population of over 566,000.

...and nobody thought of that one until now. I guess many bay cities have a "bay area", but there is one that probably dominates most thoughts and minds when referred to as such.
