Both Buffalo and Memphis seem to have been much larger and more important towns many decades ago. Both now hover at around 1 million people, but lose ground every year to other metro areas.

Do you think these towns will ever bounce back or will they slowly become AA in the future just as they have gone from major league to AAA towns in the past generation?

I personally hope they both find their way back as they both have much history and culture and some great architecture and density.

Buffalo

Memphis

Buffalo just got voted #2 best place to relocate, for whatever that is worth.

News Headlines

Personally I always liked Buffalo. I like the character of the place and I think it has a great location in terms of being close to natural beauty and other cities. Not to mention they invented the hot wing!

One thing that bothers me about Memphis is that it did not really capitalize on the recent sunbelt boom like other metros such as Nashville or Charlotte. Why is that?

I feel bad for Buffalo.
I believe Memphis will do fine- It has the location.

Buffalo is actually suffering because of its winters. It was an important industrial/port city in the past. It's not as significant or desirable anymore. (Not to the general population anyway, I love that city)-- It's rotting away, slowly.

Memphis has a poorer overall population and many more african-americans.

Memphis isn't poorer...

Estimated median household income in 2008:

Memphis: $37,207
Buffalo: $29,973

Even the cost of living is slightly lower in Memphis than Buffalo.

There are actually a lot of affluent areas in the city limits of Memphis.
