What are the best newspapers in the country. Of course big national papers like the New York Times and Washington post will top the list, but what about other smaller papers. Which are well written, interesting, and informative?

Also, how much is Newspaper reading a part of the culture where you live. Does almost everybody get the paper, and talk about it, or is it not that widespread.

What is this thing called a newspaper that you speak of?

I rarely read the printed word anymore. I enjoy getting my news online, which include a plethora of newspapers, tv and radio stations that are smart enough to invest in their websites. Subjects that usually get my attention include: financial news, education, politics, local news, and crime. I avoid sports and celebrity news, but then again, I definitely don't represent the majority of readers.

When I do read printed newspapers, I read the local papers in my community. In the past I used to read "City Paper", which is distributed in the Washington DC area -- its indepth and irreverent. I also read newspapers that are delivered free to my doorstep here in Northern Virginia because the subjects they cover sometimes affect me personally.

As far as the "best?" like I said, I get snippets of news from different places so its hard for me to say. The Washington Post, my city's newspaper, on the rare occasions that I read her, is pretty indepth and thorough. I personally know that their reporters will spend months working on stories and they are aggressive about breaking stories. Some may accuse them of having a liberal bias, however.

the new york times, obviously. newspapers are a shadow of their former selves. for purposes of this thread you are remiss to leave out the st. louis post-dispatch, which was founded by joseph pulitzer himself.

Most people in Pittsburgh will tell you that the Post Gazette is of much better quality than the Trib Review so while I chose that; I was looking at the Gazette more.

On this list, I gotta go with the Boston Globe.

Incidentally, one paper on the list that I was always disappointed with was the SF Chronicle. Given what a cosmopolitan city San Francisco is, I would have thought they would have a better daily newspaper.

Out of all of these you hear about the Boston Globe the most, at least on a national level.

I would have voted Miami Herald if it still had Dave Barry. How are we supposed to vote for best newspaper when I doubt most people on this board even pick up their own city's newspaper? I wouldn't pay a dime for the AJC where I live. All my news comes from the WSJ dropped straight at my door, and it's my favorite paper in the country.
