We're looking to relocate and are debating between these 3 cities. We were both raised in NYC. Early 40's, no kids, I'm in accounting and he's in hospitality. Looking to live in a really quiet suburb or part of the city regardless of which one we choose with mid to low crime. Also job growth and healthcare are important factors. Help!

Those three cities are all very different from each other, and all different from NYC. If NYC is all you know, they will all be culture shock. None will have a eastern feel of familiarity. Denver is midwest/mountain. LV is western. Austin is rather southern, with a bit of west thrown in. Weather will be very different too, especially LV with it's severe dryness and heat, and lack of seasons which may come to mean something to you once it's gone.

Regardless, what are you wanting to get away from in NYC, and what makes those cities appealing? Have you visited any of them?

Offhand, I'd think LV would be strongest for hospitality, and Denver weakest. Probably the opposite for accounting, and crime level.

I'd pick Austin.

Of the 3, I prefer Denver.

There's not enough information provided to make a fair arm chair assessment and reccomendation.

What do you and your husband like to do for fun, on your days off from work?
What kind of natural scenic beauty do you like best in a city/metro/region?
What kind of weather do you like best - extreme Hot and dry? Extreme hot and humid? Extreme hot/extreme cold and dry thin air?

And anything else you can think of that might be important and helpful.

As Thoreau said, none of these three will come even remotely close to replicating life in NYC.

What's your budget? Housing in Denver and Austin is expensive.

What are your interests outside of work? Do you prefer mountains with prairie, mountains with desert, or little hills next to the prairie?

For me personally:
I have no desire to live in Las Vegas. I've said before it's a garish caricature of life in America. It's ok in small doses, but to actually live there? No way.

I also wouldn't pick Austin. I've lived in the Texas Triangle (in DFW), and hated the summertime climate there. It's relentlessly hot and humid from June through mid-to-late September. You run the AC 24/7 for 3-4 months outta the year. A "cool" day in mid-July is 90 degrees. Winters are mild-ish, sure, but summers suck. Austin is scenic and outdoorsy by Texas standards (but other than water recreation Denver beats it handily). Other Austin negatives - abysmal traffic, poor public transportation, and, compared to Denver and Vegas, a small-time airport. Also if you have seasonal allergies, be prepared for the possibility of your allergy "season" lasting 9 months out of the year.

Denver is my choice - if you can afford it.

Denver doesn't have the volume of hospitality jobs that a Vegas has, but it's a renown convention city. There are plenty of downtown hotels and restaurants, and if that's not your speed, the casinos in Central City and Blackhawk are commutable from the west side of Denver.

Accounting jobs shouldn't be a problem, either. Denver has a very diverse and growing economy. Lots of tech, O&G, federal government, aerospace, and financial services opportunities.

Healthcare won't be an issue. There are plenty of hospitals and medical practices scattered throughout the metro area.

Denver has decent public transportation, a major airport, a centralized core, all the major professional sports, and easy access to a wide variety of outdoor recreation.

Denver cons? Cost of living (primarily housing), lack of water and lushness (although it's better than Vegas), traffic into and out of the mountains (can be heavy on the weekends), crowded trails, long "snow season" (usually mid-October til early May but it can snow from mid-September through Memorial Day), dry air, unpredictable weather, and hail.

I'd say take quick 3-day weekend trips and visit all 3 if you havent already to get a good feel of the cities.

I've heard from several people that Austin and Denver are very similar to each other in terms of vibe, restaurants and bars, condo housing designs, and urban ideas. I wonder if people on here have the same opinion?

Nope, no way. Extremely different cities in many ways. I'm very familiar with both.
