I'd recommend checking out northern New England. The economy hasn't hit the rocks like the rest of the country, the schools are generally quite good, there's very low crime, you're near plenty of outdoor recreation (mountains/skiing, lakes, rivers, the Atlantic Ocean) and you'll find reasonable home prices. In particular check out the cities of Manchester and Portsmouth in New Hampshire; Burlington, Vermont; and Portland, Maine. Good luck!
