Funky, "alternative", different, out-of-the-way. A place where some of the people want to secede from the State they reside in altogether.

Chapel Hill NC is known for being much more liberal than the rest of the state, as is next-door-neighbor Carrboro - the first NC city to elect an openly gay mayor. Both have a very laid back, liberal vibe. The late Jesse Helms, staunchly conservative, famously said that "Why build a zoo in NC when we can just put up a fence around Chapel Hill?

Lol I think South Florida in general is like that, not just Key West, but yes Key West is pretty unique, I love it there.

I got a very different feeling from Key West than in the rest of South Florida. It's like it's own little island, in more ways than one.

Provincetown, MA at the tip of Cape Cod. Another town at the end of the road that is a world of its own. Originally a fishing village, it evolved into an artist colony and has been known for years for its funky alternative vibe and large gay population, and like Key West a very colorful place by the sea.
