When I was at Atlanta a few weeks ago I couldn't help but notice how suburban Atlanta looks and feels a lot like Northern Virginia. Same topography, same random high-rises in odd places, same discontinuity in the built infrastructure. That is probably where the similarities end because Northern Virginia has other built areas to compete with; Hampton Roads, Richmond, etc. whereas the Atlanta metro is the bulk of the state, or close to half of Georgia, but I would like to hear from others on this topic.
If I'm correct I think that Northern Virginia also has its own rail system, but I'm not sure if that is used much or is even worth a mention but I figured I would give it a try and see where this thread goes.
My first impression of Atlanta was that it was Fairfax County in search of a Washington.
Lol. Yeah. Well the interesting thing about Atlanta is that you have pockets of intense development here and there, and a lot of really dense suburbs. I guess, if one were looking for a more affordable place to live with that type of environment Atlanta could be a cheaper option, depending on where one lived at in the city. I'm not sure how long that will continue to be the case though.
I can see how some parts remind people of NoVA but to me the Atlanta suburbs felt a lot more rural and kind of secluded... whereas with NoVA it's the complete opposite.

Is it safe to say that Northern Virginia's built out environment is denser than the Northern suburbs of Atlanta?

Definitely.
I also think Atlanta, and I've only visited a few times so I could be wrong but it seemed like they were smarter about their development. In NoVA, they've pretty much put office buildings, high rise apartments, new developments, shopping centers etc anywhere there is land available since they know it'll do well. In Atlanta it seems like they're more strategic about it and they want to keep the rural parts of their suburbs rural.
PG county with a little more Caucasians. Nothing in NoVa.
