Okay, I am posting this because we all have to admit our biases. I keep reading on the DC thread that residents are obsessed with status, drunk and generally reprehensible. This is interesting to me-- I know where it comes from but don't agree 100%. So let's lay our cards on the table.

What are your go-to stereotypes of the cities below? And are these based on
-personal experience
-media portrayals
-something you heard from someone who has been there?

I think we will see some pretty telling responses. The only rule to REMEMBER-- no bashing. No arguing. Just lay it out.

Cities:

New York
LA
San Francisco
Chicago
Philly
Boston
Atlanta
Dallas
San Diego
Seattle
Portland
DC

Cities:

New York - Power
LA - Laid back but glitze
San Francisco - Liberal Idealism
Chicago - Working City, America in a way
Philly - Contankerous
Boston - Stodgy
Atlanta - Image driven
Dallas - Texan (dallas just always screams Texas to me not good nor bad)
San Diego - Laid back happy
Seattle - Overly bought into itself
Portland - Green to point of elitism
DC - Sterile

Think could also change some to more positives but these jump out at me and love most of these places

My stereotypes

New York: The natives are talkative and loud, and the transplants to the city think they're better than everybody else. They're all in a hurry. Either hurry up or go the hell back to New Jersey.

Los Angeles: Everybody from the super-rich to the bums and drifters loves living there, and tries to rationalize the city's problems. Their idea of what Los Angeles stands for is rooted in the 1980's.

San Francisco: The city is overrun with social engineers who have a strict open-mindedness code, which is very ironic when you think about it. Group sex is acceptable, but owning a goldfish is not.

Chicago: They like it when you mention them with New York and Los Angeles, but hate it when you remind them that they're in the Midwest. Sarcasm is the preferred sense of humor.

Philadelphia: It's a city that often feels unappreciated, and has a chip on its shoulder and a bit of an attitude problem. Sports are literally a matter of life and death there.

Boston: They're proud of their social grace and sophistication there, but get a little bit of booze in them and they'll do something embarrassing that can be permanently documented on a social media website.

Atlanta: Old white money meets new black money here. Everybody loves to flaunt their wealth whether they really have it or not. One of the most image-conscious cities in the United States.

Dallas: It's very similar to Atlanta, but with Hispanic people instead of black people, and an even bigger ego. Possibly the most image-conscious city in the United States. Even the Christians make a grand show of their religiosity.

San Diego: This is everybody's favorite place in the United States to take a siesta. Half the workforce in the area is from Mexico. Ugly women from all over the country move here so they can pretend they're pretty simply because they live there.

Seattle: A city full of militant environmentalists, computer geeks, Japanese, and unapproachable heroin addicts. They know how to make some kick-ass music, though.

Portland: Seattle's slacker/stoner little brother. It's a 21st-Century hippy commune masquerading as a major U.S. city. That's not fog hanging over the city; that's purple haze.

Washington DC: "Give us your tiresome, your nouveau riche, your horse's asses yearning to flaunt taxpayer-subsidized wealth, the wretched douchebags of your community."

New York - fast-paced, rude, materialistic, intense, workaholics
LA - unintelligent, sketchy, ambitious, excitement-seeking, low attention span, shallow
San Francisco - druggies and rich liberals, either really open or with money reserved and demanding
Chicago - diverse, the white people tend to be boring, sports-loving meatheads, corrupt but friendly
Philly - rude, unfriendly, hostile, intense, demanding - have nothing good to say really
Boston - very reserved but nice enough if not behind the wheel of a car!
Atlanta - nice but fake friendly, good BS artists
Dallas - haven't spent much time here but would say similar to Atlanta although even more materialistic and egotistical (bigger is better)
San Diego - reserved, clean cut, yuppie
Seattle - reserved but somewhat alternative, depressed, pretend not to be materialistic even though they are
Portland - similar to Seattle but more obnoxious and self-satisfied with how green, progressive, and humane they are
DC - yuppie workaholics, arrogant, BS artists, lack substance, back-stabbing, as a poster earlier said these were the douchebag people who didn't really have any good ideas but who ran in high school for class president for their own personal glory

It seems as sterotypes are never positive because they are there to make you feel better about where you live. (if your insecure about it in the first place)

Did you notice that you have a serious North/South bias? All of your Northern cities have negative comments, and Southern cities with postive (or moreso) comments.
