A ton of threads compare the east and west coasts. But I haven't seen any comparing California to the Great Lakes region. So, I thought it would be interesting to see how these regions stack up to one another.
Major cities in California are:
Los Angeles
San Francisco
San Jose
San Diego
Fresno
Sacramento
Major cities in the Great Lakes region are:
Chicago
Toronto
Detroit
Cleveland
Buffalo
Milwaukee
Rate these two groups - including other cities/meto areas in these regions - based on the following:
Architecture
Urban density
Public transportation
Weather
Nightlife
Visitor attractions
Cultural experience
Location
Scenery
Economy

1. Your title says which is more urban but your poll says which is better
2. You seem to have greatly cherry picked which cities to state for The Great Lakes.
Minneapolis
Ann Arbor
Detroit
Chicago
Ottawa
Toronto
St Louis
Cincinnati
Cleveland
Pittsburgh
Indianapolis
Buffalo
Rochester
Hamilton
Indianapolis
London
I've grown up in Southern California, but I've always loved the Great Lakes. Part of my family is from Minneapolis and I've visited every summer since I was a little kid. That and I've always wanted to see Chicago and Toronto. I love the "Lake Culture?" It's very homey .
As much as I love the Great Lakes/Midwest, I think California sweeps, imo.
Los Angeles > Chicago, and for the rest of the cities:
Better climate
Better scenery
Better food
Inner cities not as old and run down
More diverse overall (Asian & Hispanic)
Better architecture
Better attractions
Better economy
Superior nightlife
Better transit as a whole
More lifestyle options

This isn't completely true. The forests and Great Lakes have some of the best and most pristine scenery in the world. On top of that Chicago and Toronto are very diverse and offer excellent food services. I think the combined output of the Great Lakes exceeds California's.. Sorry, just more people. Transit might be a good topic of argument, architecture as well. And Chicago's inner city is not run down .
You cannot simply discount everything this, pardon the pun, Great Region has to offer.
