Living in Las Vegas vs Phoenix (state, better, crime rate, place)

I am looking to move from the Bay Area in California to the southwest, preferebly either Las Vegas or Phoenix. My reason for wanting to move is because it is too expensive to live in CA and I want to someday own my own home. Fairly new homes in Las Vegas and Phoenix are really cheap so that attracts me. Also I am a big fan of the desert. I really enjoy the desert landscape and can see myself spending time in the outdoors hiking in the Canyons. I don't like the cold and rain so plentiful sunshine is perfect for me. I am not a gambler so the entertainment in Las Vegas is not that big of a draw for me.
I have been to Las Vegas several times and have checked out homes on two occasions. Once over in Henderson and the other time in Moutains Edge. I really like the houses and they were within my budget. I hear that Summerlin and Green Valley are nice arears as well, which is where I want to live, but I may not be able to afford those areas as of now. I have only been Phoenix once for business, so I didn't get a chance to look around, but an internet search on home prices show they are about the same to those in Las Vegas. The houses look preety much the same too so I guess all new homes built in the desert have a certain style now.
I know Las Vegas's economy revolves around gaming, construction, and military, which may not offer many jobs right now. If I could, I would try to work security in a casino but I'm not sure how stable those jobs are and from asking others on the forum, the jobs are hard to get and it doesn't pay much either. Phoenix on the other hand is a larger city, has a downtown financial district, and has more industries. I believe the job market there is slightly better then in Las Vegas right now.
The biggest advantage I have with Phoenix is that my current company has a branch in Phoenix, so I would be able to submit a lateral transfer to their branch and keep the same title and pay. They also have openings for my position right now as well. I would get to keep on my benefits and seniority as well, which is good. The main thing is that I won't have to go job hunting, and I'll be pretty set before the move. I could start up with minimal training.
If I move to Las Vegas, I will have to leave my current job, get certified in Nevada, apply to casinos and hopefully get called back for an interview. It will probably take some time before I can land a entry level security job. I wouldn't mind if it all worked out, but its a big risk for me to take, especially if I have bills to pay.
Personally I would much rather live in Las Vegas, but the job situation is the biggest issue. I know the economy is getting better but I think Las Vegas will be last to recover since gaming is something people do for lesiure and only when they have extra money to spend. I really liked driving around in the outskirts of the Las Vegas Valley and seen how much it has expanded in the past few years. Also Nevada not having an income tax is a good benefit.
I'm seeing if anyone has experience with living in either Phoenix or Las Vegas could give me some information about the similiarities and differences, and which you think is better? I'm trying to find information on if either city is cheaper or more expensive to live in. I asume both cities are quite equal in pay and standards of living but I could be wrong. Las Vegas has lots of entertainment, but what does Phoenix have? Both cities appear to have the same type of lifestyle, that is living in the desert. Any information will help. Thanks.

I am a Phoenix native so I should be able to help. From reading your post, you should move to Phoenix. The job market in Las Vegas is very bleak, and considering you can transfer to Phoenix that makes it a no brainer IMO. Las Vegas has much more entertainment options, but other than that the cities are pretty much the same. Unless you are a big party animal like me, you will be happy in either city.

Nothing, because no one is out in the heat long enough to tell the difference. The one disadvantage of Phoenix is that its much larger and therefore much more spread out. Sure, you can get a house for next to nothing in some of the outlying areas, but you could be looking at a very long commute if you buy a house in one part of town and work in another.

Thanks for speaking for the weather. I forgot about that. I can say that when I visited Phoenix in July, it was HOT. Probably the hottest I have ever experiences. I was in Las Vegas in July of 2001. My eyeballs were burning but Phoenix beat that. I actually could tell a difference, Phoenix is hotter. But your right that I will be indoors most of the time so it probably won't matter. I do know employees that work in my company that do have to drive across the Phoenix metro area for an hour to get to work. The branch is close to downtown, and I would proably prefer to live in a nice suburb. Sun City, Scottsdale, and Gilbert all look nice but is a drive to the city.

I already live near the ocean. Its cold, foggy, and expensive so I'm trying to leave it. I rather have a scenic view of the desert, preferbly the Sonoran desert, Monument Valley, or the Canyon Lands in my backyard but this aint happening, so the regular desert is fine.
How is crime between the two cities? I never considered that. I would think that Phoenix has a higher crime rate, but it might just be do to Sheriff Joe's tough style followed by the media frenzy around him. With a leader like him, crime related stories probably dominate the Phoenix area.

Yea the job is probably the smartest way to go. I can't do anything without income. Its seems like a no brainer answer, but I still can't decide. Las Vegas only grew in the last 2 decades so its stil not big enough to have all the businesses. I guess there is always the possibility of my company opening a branch in Las Vegas in the near and can transfer there from Phoenix.
Eh, IMO both are bad choices. I love Las Vegas but its seems like aterrible place to live. Phoenix is much better rounded. I wouldn't limit myself to just those two cities.
If I were you I would go with Phoenix.
