Which one of these cities would you rather live in and why?

Houston as a top-tier city with almost any amenity you could want, but is overall dependent on the automobile and lacks the natural beauty and 'cool' factor Portland is known for. Portland you get those things plus the ability to live without a car relying exclusively on public transit. Houston leans left but Portland is a true liberal city.

My pick would be Houston as owning a car doesn't bother me and Houston's urban amenities in my opinion far exceed Portland. What about you?

For my money, Houston is FAR "cooler" than Portland. I'm sure that bchris means that the latter has more of a "hipster" element, but the two terms are not synonymous.

Portland can't hang with Houston. Houston is on a whole other level. End of story.

Austin & Portland however are very good comparisons since both are alike in many, many ways. Large, not overly huge cities with a young populace, liberal attitude, indie music culture, hippy, & overall "weird" college town vibe.

Austin is Portland without the mountains & cool climate. Austin has rolling hills & is warm/hot most of the year. Both cities front major rivers.

This.

Plus, Houston has enough of that cool, funky vibe in select districts such as Montrose that anybody concerned with 'hip' should be able to get by.

However, there are reasons plenty would still choose Portland. It's a lot easier to live car free in Portland for one, and the mountains might be another reason people would choose it. Some people would also prefer the completely liberal environment in Portland rather than the more mixed environment in Houston.

Portlands metro is double the size of Salt Lake city. Portland is a city of almost 600,000. Very nice dense and urban city core. The op asks which would you rather live. I personally wouldnt want to live in the sprawl of houston.

I do love the Pacific Northwest especially how green it is. But Houston has more of what I'm looking for compared to Portland. Both are great cities. Houston has more amenities but that doesn't make its better for everyone.

Houston, and it's been maybe ten or so years since I was last there, was too flat, ugly and dried out for me. The weather was too, too hot and humid. "Downtown" seemed devoid of people once the business day was over. No doubt, it's cheaper to live in Houston, but that's usually the case ... you get what you pay for. Crime statistics are ridiculously scary. And it doesn't have any amenities that you can't get in Portland. Except some of the major league sports teams, which is so far off my radar ...

So, have to say ... I'm happiest where I am.
