A lot of Northeasterners venture out for a little while and end up returning home. I've done it (moved to Seattle for 5 years then back to Boston) and I'm doing it again. Can't rule out that I'd never go back. Family Ties are strong in the Northeast. I prefer the lifestyle out West, but can never deny my New England roots, they're always in my heart in a big way.

I'm going to do almost I never do - advocate for the northeast.

Why anybody should surprised when there is a re-distribution of population from more to less densely populated states after we've gleefully gutted our northern and mid-west manufacturing bases and sold out our labor force is the only real mystery. We're entering the asset-stripping phase of our economic empire and the the South is leading us in a race to the bottom. Germany considers us "their Mexico" and soon our only finished products will be weapons, petro-chemicals and paint. As far the manufacturing that has moved down South: best of luck keeping those plants open when those our Government continues to authorize fast track labor deals with counties like El Salvador and Nicaragua, where the minimum wage is zero. When that time comes, I'm sure you can just blame the Mexicans.

New Jerseyans: would you describe the reduction of the percentage of people in your state who fail to grasp any of this a net loss?

It is not surprising people are leaving the northeast states -- leaves one wondering if this migration is weather related as I think the east may still be reeling from Hurricane Sandy. Having witnessed the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, I can relate.

Portland, Oregon remains high on my list for a retirement option but the number of gray days could be a negative. Also, city-data has some interesting comments from local residents there. As much as I love the climate here in the San Francisco bay area --- I'm being priced out (rent and purchase power). San Diego retirement is idyllic for the uber rich if you are looking for nice climate.

I'm not sure if the moving van lines are capturing all demographics. Most people I know in their 20's just packed their bags and bought new furniture or moved in their car, particularly people I know who moved to NYC, DC, etc...I mean, they are often moving into small places or with roommates, so what are they going to bring?

I live in the South, but would love to relocate to the NE one day. I guess the grass is greener on the other side.
