New Orleans would be my choice easily. Charleston is a great second option. I don't know anything about Columbia, so I find it interesting that it scores well for walkability.

The Hampton Roads area is notoriously sprawling, but downtown Norfolk and some of the nearby neighborhoods are pedestrian friendly. I stayed downtown for a wedding last fall and didn't need a car to get anywhere (which surprised me). Richmond also has some good walkable neighborhoods (and great historic architecture).

A lot of people are sticking to the OPs 500k+ metro population requirement in which case Savannah is too small (377,000 metro pop). But yeah, Savannah (and Asheville) are both very walkable cities.

Savannah easily has the most walkable urban core of any city in the South, regardless of size. So it's hard not to include it on this list.

Does it really affect you, plus Savannah feels much bigger downtown.

Does it really affect me? The thread? "Which mid-sized Southern cities have the most walkable, vibrant, populated urban cores?"??? Does it really affect you???? I'm just pointing out a seemingly intentional misuse of numbers (very common on here...) when you respond to questions of MSA and put up CSA numbers... That being said, Savannah is a great candidate and should be mentioned, but N.O. might have something to say about this "easily" / no competition nonsense...
