I've been offered two jobs: one in Chicago, one in San Francisco. I live ~45 min from SF but haven't spent too much time there so I'm interested in hearing people's thoughts. Mid 20s, single, gay male here if that matters. I'm a native of Southern California so also curious to hear from any Californian's who have made the adjustment. Thank you!

It depends what you're looking for, I've heard San Francisco being called the more sophisticated city, while Chicago the more cosmopolitan due to more polish people, hotdog vendors, and NASCAR/monster truck rallies.

I know you're asking for you specifically, but this subject has been done to death over and over recently... Short answer, visit them and see what you prefer (since you know what you like best), both are great.

I did review previous threads and that's why I added some details I thought would get answers particular to my situation. I wish I could visit them both I can't make it to Chicago before I'd have to accept and even if I could I don't think I could learn too much in a day.

Chicago is certainly bigger, cheaper, more dangerous, has the extreme 4 seasons, lake instead of ocean. But San Francisco feels more international, is also more gay-friendly. However, San Francisco is pretty chilly and overcast year round, that can get old.

Its not really that dangerous unless you decide to be an idiot and wander into Englewood or Austin or places like that. Crime is confined to relatively small areas of the city. Yes SF is safer but Chicago crime is REALLY exaggerated on TV.

Well, I'm not a Californian, but I've been to both northern and southern California (and I'm going to both again starting with SF next week). Since you've spent a little time in SF, what did you think of it from what you were able to see? Likes/dislikes, things you look for in a city, will you miss being close to home, etc.?

SF is not "pretty chilly and overcast year round" in a good portion of the city. Even for the western side, "year round" is an exaggeration.

I say Chicago. I'm from LA. The actual city of LA. I hate SF and nearly every single person I've met from the actual city of LA that moves to the actual city of SF hates it. I don't know a single person from the city of LA that LOVES SF. Some tolerate it, others like it but prefer LA, and others hate SF. So if that's your case, I say Chicago.

Either way, Chicago gets my vote! SF feels very small coming from SoCal. Cost of living is out of control. The weather sucks. Chicago may suck in the winter, but having spring and fall is awesome. And, Chicago gets warm enough in summer to actually go to the beaches of Lake Michigan. You can't swim in the waters of SF even on the few days it's warm enough to. Public transportation in Chicago is way better. The people are much friendlier. The nightlife is much better and affordable. Clubs are open till 5am instead of shoving people out at 1:30am after paying double the prices for your drinks.

It is very easy

1. Which is best for your career?
2. Which pays the highest salary?

The city is not important when it comes to a job even if it means to moving to Northern Alaska. If I was a homosexual I would stay in SF but I think you would have a "gay-time" in Chicago too.
