Forests - Washington: Particularly around Olympic National Park. I love the cedars, hemlocks, and moss draped evergreens.
Lakes - Michigan: I mean, duh! Hard to compete with the state surrounded by 5 Great Lakes. Vermont is pretty nice too, I like mountain lakes like Lake Champlain and Lake Willoughby
Rivers - I like the fast running clear and white water creeks in the Rockies be it Colorado, Idaho, or Montana.
Mountains - Alaska: No comparison, it has the monopoly on mountain scapes in the US
Camping: Washington: Out on the Pacific shore of Olympic National Park with a big fire pit on the beach to take in the sunset and crashing waves
Fishing: Alaska: best fishing I've ever done was out of Homer on a bay surrounded by mountains and humpback whale sightings. Meanwhile railing up a 20 lb. halibut and having it for dinner later is a really damn good day!
Canoeing -Maine: canoeing the sandy banks of the Saco River and then jumping nto the swimming holes.
Hiking: Colorado - the best hikes I've done were summiting 14'ers in Colorado. The thin air, deep blue skies, and vistas at higher elevations gave me a bit of euphoria.
I voted for ALASKA, which for some strange reason is placed near the bottom of the poll, despite the fact they have more wilderness then any other state. And Alaska is certainly the wildest least developed of the states.
Most of the western states are among the best in the wilderness category. After Alaska, I would guess California or maybe Idaho.
Pennsylvania should be on this list. Huge hunting state.
