What are your top five favorite cities to experience while walking around and taking in the streetscape(s) they have to offer?
As criteria, either choose a versatile city where one neighborhood that leads to another is night-and-day different from the one before it (which is different than the one before it) OR choose a streetscape that, while uniform, has it's own look and feel to it that no where else could ever have or match. Things that define streetscape are architecture, buildings (don't have to be skyscrapers), parks, sidewalks, scenery, anything that you can view from your panoramic stereoscopic vision (your eyes) in front of you that looks good, if not great, from street level.
Get creative and show off what you like and what you know. Get creative.

For what it's worth, mine are 1) New York; 2) Chicago; 3) New Orleans; 4) Montreal; 5) Vancouver.
The most sincere of honorable mentions to Seattle, Portland, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Boston, and Toronto.

I've never been to the west coast, so I can't comment on anything beyond Texas.
1) New Orleans - No other city has streets that practically tell you its history and its spirit, without any words being spoken. It has the more historic districts than any city in the USA.
2) New York City - Manhattan was amazing.
3) Miami - So tropical.
4) Washington DC - You know where you are when you're in DC. I was impressed
5) Salem, MA - Beautiful town. Very well preserved.
Of those that I've been to these are the best from an urban planner's perspective:
1. San Francisco - so compact, so many distinct neighborhoods, so much scenery
2. DC - history and a ridiculous amount of attractions, too many to see in just one trip
3. Chicago - the lakefront, Grant Park, skyscrapers along the Chicago River, great architecture
4. Seattle - again, great scenery and some really great neighborhoods and a maritime feel
5. Toronto - I walked all over when I was there and really enjoyed the diversity of streetscape and people
I still really need to hit such cities as NYC, Boston, Montreal, and New Orleans before I can make a really informed judgement.

My top cities that really have their own brand of architecture and unique streetscapes that aren't commonly replicated elsewhere based on having a uniform look....
Santa Fe, NM
Miami Beach, FL
Charleston, SC
San Francisco, CA
Quebec City, QC
In the OP's criteria of drastic transitions from one neighborhood to the next I'd put LA right at the top of that list and also Philadelphia.

Thanks for the Salem shout out. I love that city! I was born there and lived there from 2009 - 2012. It's my favorite city I ever lived in. I rented an apartment in a house built in 1850 with solid walls. Salem and many other coastal towns north of Boston like Newburyport, Gloucester, and Marblehead have really cool streetscapes with origins as colonial seaports dating back to the 1600's with relics of centuries old federalist homes from trade merchants, brick townhomes, and ornamental streetlamps.
I also remember seeing 2-3 foot high snowbanks on the sidewalks after blizzards there, kind of like the way they are now. That's part of what keeps out in the desert. But Salem will always be home to me. Coastal New England cities definitely have a look and feel all their own. I'll post pics later.
