What's not to 'get?' They are clearly not in the same tier, as anyone that's been to both without blinders on can clearly state.

Not sure I agree with that - it's one of the top important, but most I'd have to say any major center of finance like NYC or London.

In global city rankings, Washington DC usually comes after New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago.

However, I don't think that is what this thread is discussing.

and actually after living in DC for 4 years its just a smaller version of LA in the way its laid out

LA's core, while less polished and walkable, is more dense in terms of housing and people. The gap only grows as you go further out. Not hard to get really.

Fact is, LA has nearly as many people living at 30k and 50k densities as DC, Boston, and Philadelphia combined, and more than all three at 20k.Those numbers are not to be casually dismissed.
