Chattanooga, is a really cool city, lots to do. Denver, isolated, but plenty to do. Hendersonville/Ashville combo is fun too. I guess I would pick Chattanooga, Tennessee. Greenville, SC, to many not considered a mountain city, is also nice.
Colorado Springs. A medium-sized metro within an hour's drive of Pikes Peak and environs. Not a bad place to live. Its setting is more like SLC than Denver.
I'll add on to the pile for Asheville. It's a beautiful small city with the restaurant/cultural amenities of cities five times larger and access to all kinds of outdoor recreation within an hour at most.
Ouray,Co. Beautiful, good schools and close to Telluride for skiing. Not to close to Denver though 5:30 drive. Aspen,Co is also great with great skiing and is beautiful with Snowmass mountain and the maroon bells watch over the town. Still Ouray wins.
