A plurality of Georgia's transplants come from the south. Atlanta gets the bulk of Georgia's transplants. Of the million people Atlanta gained last decade, 550,000 of them were African American, a solid majority. Those northern transplants are mostly black.

I think the poll results would be different if people realized that Houston is NOT part of South Texas.

Is there a restaurant that serves fried chicken?.......

If the intention of this thread by the OP was to just simply state his/her opinion and then get validated for it by unanimous agreement, then it could have been more clear in that regard. Frankly, many thread topics here on C-D Forum fall into that category.
I was told that in my case and my family in the South Florida area are basically an anomaly by Happiness.
Southern Culture is not just country music. This is partly my point.Black culture which is largely Southern is ignored as if its none existent in South Florida

Twenty years ago, the leading source of Georgia's domestic migration was Alabama. Now, there are more New Yorkers, and Georgia's growth is fueled by in-migration from numerous states.
Black people from Jamaica,Nigeria,Haiti,Kenya,Ghana,Barbados etc .
I just gave the source. What is your source that says otherwise because your info proves nothing

[b]So that means nothing. A ton of places aspire to be like New York, and in the case of South Florida and Miami, the only reason it was ever called that is because of Northern transplants repopulating the area...

I've met white and Latina girls from Miami who had southern accents, and were southern in food tastes, music, and style...

It's important to remember that "Southern culture" is not monolithic, and the traditional, archetypal Southern culture is really only present in smaller cities and rural areas of the South. Most large cities of the South today have some noticeable outside cultural influences on the local variation of southern. Miami and South Florida are no different here...

Is Southern the dominant atmosphere of South Florida? Probably not. There is an overwhelming Caribbean vibe, a huge Latino vibe, large areas of people with Northeast ties. But to ignore the impact of Southern culture on these groups is ignorant. The two cultures have joined each other and created a wholly unique culture that is only seen in Miami and South Florida, but that doesn't mean it's "unsoutherm". You guys kill me....

It's just a different, unique kind of Southern...
With all due respect ? Miami was founded by Yankees in the 1890's so it never was a "Southern" city to begin with.
Please show me where "Northern" transplants "repopulated MIAMI!

You have to be joking thinking that Most large cities of the South today have some noticeable outside cultural influences on the local variation of southern. Miami and South Florida are no different here...

The city was founded by Northerners!
Please show us a "comparable" cultural" city in the South like Miami?...There isn't any.

Ah, but when you combine migration from other Southern states, they are still the biggest senders to Georiga.

Do you know how to read the graph?

New York is a bigger sender than Alabama, but when you combine Alabama, the carolinas, Tennessee, etc, it far outnumbers the number of New Yorkers and even all Northeast migrants. Only 8% of Georgia's transplants are from the Northeast, where as 11% are from other Southern states (14% if you include Florida as Southern). Most of the migrants from the northeast are African Americans with southern backgrounds anyway so Atlanta's southern culture is quite safe.

This information is based off of census tracking for the past century.

Not sure how to respond to that. I think a lot of us would be healthier if we spent less time here.

Northerners "paid" to have Miami built it but Southerners like those in my family came from Georgia and the Carolinas.
Quote:
By the early 1900’s, Miami was growing at breakneck speed. So fast, that there wasn’t the man power to expand at the rate of investment. Post slavery, there was a large number of African Americans still living in the southern US states where they lived as slaves. But, in the early 1900’s, Industrialization was ramping up, and when free African Americans got wind of this, millions began heading to the North East and industrial cities in the mid-west.
Quote:
What many people don’t know about the Great Migration though is that there was a significant migration of free African Americans that went south, mostly from Georgia into Florida.
Quote:
The majority of these northern transplants who came to Miami settled in an area referred to as, “colored town” which eventually became known as Overtown, NW of the city core. You’ll see that the various colored towns in other cities around the country are all located in the same NW quadrant.

These initial African Americans worked in labor roles like construction and in the service industry. This era was also during the time period of the Harlem Renaissance in New York, and many famous musicians would make the journey south during winter months to play in the ever-increasing number of hotels and resorts. But, they were not allowed to stay where they were performing as Miami was a very segregated city. So, after their paying performances on Miami Beach, they would head back to Overtown where they stayed and performed at after parties that often went early into the morning, and parties in which whites would come to see the well-known performers do their the thing as well.

In 1926, there was a massive hurricane that almost wiped Miami off the map. It was the African Americans who were essentially forced to perform the clean up of the city and sequentially the rebuild, this time constructing with concrete and cinder block instead of wood which was common practice before the storm.

Overtown continued to sprawl and there was an ever-growing influx of African Americans into the city as the neighborhood was known to be prosperous for the time. But, like many cities in the early 1960’s in the south, racial tensions grew stronger. Martin Luther King even visited Miami during this time. Almost at the peak of its glory, there was one factor that devastated vibrant Overtown for good, and it was intentional.

in 1961, construction of Interstate 95 began, and where was this massive highway set to run directly through? Overtown of course. The city made plans to relocated thousands of families to a newly “developed” region of the city even further in the NW named Liberty City, which was thrown together in a matter of months. Construction was shoddy, and if you know anything about Miami now, it’s one of the most decrepit neighborhoods in the entire city.

I95 literally divided Overtown in half, and was built directly over the main thoroughfare of Overtown, NW 2nd Avenue.
Some people on this forum want to try HARD not to have any association with the South ignoring history or either oblivious of it.
Florida and South Florida had the WORST race relations for years during the Jim Crow South which Florida apparently had the strictest codes regarding segregation.
As the fortunes of South Florida grew, the blacks including the Bahamians which were the earliest ,were pushed further out from the areas as they became needed for the wel heeled whites of the North.
Lynchings became the more popular way to get rrid of blacks that would not comply.
