Smaller metropolitan areas (populations between 300,000 and 2.5 million) ex Greater Richmond VA, Greater Columbus OH, Greater Allentown PA, Greater St Louis, Greater Little Rock, Greater Salt Lake City, Greater Jacksonville. Much less competition in the dating scene, so if your not so good looking this may be better as beautiful women may be more content with dating you. People tend to be more genuine, especially in metropolitan areas in the northeast/Midwest of this size.

Larger metropolitan areas (populations of 2.5 million and more) ex Greater New York, Greater Los Angeles, Greater DC, Greater Chicago, Greater Philadelphia, Greater Boston, Greater Miami, Greater Atlanta, Greater Houston, Greater Dallas, Greater San Francisco. Much larger dating pool and far more competition too, people tend to keep their options. People are more likely to be fake, pretentious, and unloyal.

Which is better for a single person in their 20s trying to build friendships and relationships??

Depends on if you want to fish or drink a local IPA.

As a New Jersey transplant I can attest that Midwest is actually 1,000 times friendlier. I think it's relatively easy to make friends in the Columbus metro area as young professional because Ohio State alone has 65,000 students and then are significant employment centers like Lbrands, Nationwide, JP Morgan Chase etc. which employ a lot of people. Plus there is a definite bar culture so if you're the least bit social you have a good chance at making friends here.

In terms of the "dating scene" I'm a gay man so my experience is likely vastly different from heterosexual peoples'. Aside from a few very pretentious transplants in D.C. I had a pretty pleasant experience there and found it was easy to make friends/go on dates with quality guys.

Larger. I tried dating in both Manchester, New Hampshire, and DFW. I didn't find the people in Manchester any more genuine, except maybe more genuinely uncaring and self-absorbed. Also, the pool of potential dates was much smaller.

I think this depends a bit on who you are and what you're looking for. I prefer larger metros dating wise because of more options and I seem to find more in common with people. But also, I'm a gay man of color. I've lived in 3 cities of 100,000, and two large metro areas.
