I know Chattanooga and Huntsville and a few others are booming economically. This is a list of cities that haven't done as well.
If you look at statistics, Knoxville is doing a bit better than Chattanooga for growth rates, job growth, etc. Chattanooga gets more attention because 1) it has risen so much from a pretty dismal period (although Knoxville certainly had its slump) and grown from being a smaller city. 2) Chattanooga is big into the hype (it does have plenty to be proud of) and Knoxville is more comfortable in its own skin.

Also Knoxville's growth tends to be more homegrown and organic. There are things an outsider might not notice like empty office/store buildings turned into condos.

Not true. Using statistics from the Tennessee Department of Labor, in the last year Hamilton County (Chattanooga) has added 4,360 jobs while Knox County (Knoxville) has added 800. For the entire metropolitan areas, Chattanooga has added 7,230 jobs while Knoxville has added 800. Actually, that's over 13 months, not 12 months (I can't find the stats for May 2016).

http://www.tn.gov/assets/entities/la...es,_Apr_16.pdf
http://tn.gov/assets/entities/labor/...%2C_May_17.pdf

For population growth, the Census Bureau says that in the last year Chattanooga grew by 1,351 (0.77%) and Knoxville grew by 1,043 (0.56%).

Oh dear, I've been going by stats posted by one of our moderators. It is from the US conference of mayors.

For population , Chattanooga is growing fasterinside the city limits as that is where they focus a lot of their growth. How does Knox County compare to Hamilton County?

Again, I intentionally left out some of the more booming cities in the south. I probably should have left out Knoxville too so it would be more fair game with the rest.

Knoxville isn't booming, more like steady growth. The numbers I posted include surrounding towns. There was a slump but it was a couple of decades ago. I feel it is getting the votes because it has the best scenery and has one of the better locations in relation to other cities.

I probably should have voted for Birmingham. Though as an oldster my image of B'ham is a large city not mid sized.

City proper, yeah. That doesn't mean much. The big 4 in Alabama already have a similar city proper population. The difference is, Birmingham still has a far larger metro exceeding 1 million people. It'll still truly be the largest place in the state for some time to come. Jacksonville has the largest city proper population in Florida but no one would consider it bigger than Orlando, Tampa and Miami because they have much larger metro areas. The same would apply to Birmingham Vs. Huntsville, Montgomery, and Mobile.

Understood but Huntsville becoming the largest city in Alabama doesn't compare to Jacksonville and Florida. Huntsville is actually growing and it's not consolidated with the county.

That's true, but Birmingham's metro is still significantly larger than Huntsville's so it won't really mean anything in terms of gauging which place is larger.

Birmingham has an urban area around 750k, Huntsville's was 286k in 2010.

Huntsville is growing but not that fast. Birmingham has plenty of time to stage a turnaround before they would be anywhere close.
