right now i would say new jersey and california have the most man made ugliness since they are so populous or dense. Montana and Alaska are more than likely the two most beautiful states.
Population and density don't have to equate with ugliness. Look at Midtown Manhattan, Chicago's Gold Coast, San Francisco's Nob Hill and hundreds of other urban neighborhoods that are human scale with well-planned public spaces.

exactly! i seriously dislike extremist environmentalists who act like it's not a humans right to build shelter to live. these are the worst kinds of people in this world, right up there with rapists and killers.
man made ugliness should be anything made by a human that wasn't created to be efficient, or wasn't created with efficiency. with that being said, maybe michigan is the state with the most man made ugliness since American made cars are known to be gas guzzlers and such. michigan is just now converting its cars to be more efficient.
cities without zoning have a lot of man made ugliness. this applies to the sunbelt states, since within its cities and surrounding areas, there's virtually endless amounts of land in a 360 degree area as far out a an eagles eyes can see. sunbelt cities just build wherever, with the lack of an efficient "center" because people on the edge of this center live too far away to make use of it. houston and atlanta quickly come to mind.
los angeles is actually 'densely' sprawled, but since a lot of buildings in east LA are runned down, there is this perception of LA being an ugly city with the worlds worse kind of sprawl. UNTRUE!!! the only problem with LA's zoning is the fact that its public transportation system is inefficient. if LA had a world class public rapid mass transit system, more people would be walking around the city and it would look more lively! it has the density, houston and atlanta don't.

It's not the fact that LA doesn't look "lively" it's the fact that Los Angeles is just ugly. Endless miles of dirt, spray paint, day-laborers lingering on corners, crappy and shameful run down low-ride buildings and strip malls, a disgusting purple haze that lingers over the sky.
Nobody is saying that it's a horrible city, but most of it just looks ugly and run down. It's the perfect example of a place that was once pretty nice naturally, but was ruined over time. Hence the "man made ugliness" reference.

the Gold Coast and Midtown are the exceptions to the rule. There aren't too many places like that...especially in New Jersey!

again, you must be referring to east LA! cuz i know for a FACT that west LA does not fit your description above. as for the purple haze, sure, LA has its bad days, but on most days, it's fine. the grossness of smog is overrated. the only way to tell if its a bad day is if the skyline looks hazy from far away. if you stay in the good parts of town, LA is just as competitive in its aestetics and offerings as any other big city out there: FACT!

It wouldn't have to be that way in New Jersey either if folks would start believing in the potential renaissances of their cities again as opposed to running and hiding in the suburbs with their heads in the sand. Go onto that state forum and see the way most cities (besides Hoboken and Jersey City) get bashed into the ground very deeply with few, if any, recommendations on how to improve them. If you tell everyone "just move to the suburbs," then won't the suburbs eventually have the SAME problems that caused you to flee Newark, Elizabeth, Paterson, Camden, Trenton, etc. in the first place? Crime knows no boundaries, folks. Murders happen in the most affluent of exurbs as well.

And California's not even dense. Is there even a state on the East Coast with a population desnity smaller than CA's?
I've been to most major American cities in my life and the one the stands out in my mind as one I never want to return to is Detroit. Granted it's been 20 years since I was there and maybe it's better now, but the place was truly frightening to me. If cancer looked like a city, it would be Detroit, an embarrassment to the country as far as I'm concerned.
