Then there’s a huge gap. Realistically though, given one choice I don’t see how it’s not LA and LA only. Those mentioning Nashville and Austin obviously don’t know much about music.
Well, they’re the live music capitals of the country. So, without your own personal bias, I would say that you are wrong. But, yeah.. Not particularly fond of the breakthrough artists from the two cities.
Top tier:
LA & NYC for rock, indie, electronic, experimental, pop, hiphop, R&B. LA has had the edge for all but the last 2 the past 5 years imo and this will likely continue and this reflects the general trend of LA being seen as the cooler big city to live in for the past few years between the 2 though there are obviously other factors (location, personal preference of city style, climate/weather, etc.).
2nd tier:
Austin, Portland, and possibly Denver and Nashville for indie rock.
Detroit, Chicago, SF for electronic.
Atlanta for hiphop.
Nashville for country.
Portland, Seattle, PNW region in general for metal and folk.

Cute
But LA and NYC are more than just little “Live Music Capitals”
Not that Chicago is the top tier music city in the country or anything like that, but as a consumer who goes to a lot of live shows the nice thing about being here is that almost every single act/show/tour makes a stop here so you can see just about everything.
I couldn't go, but Ariana Grande did a surprise 3 stop NYC/LA/Chi tour last summer. In the last year and a half or so I've seen Kesha, Nightwish, Helloween, Def Leppard/Journey, Chili Peppers, and went to the Spring Awakening music festival. This festival called Lollapalooza happens here also. The Aragon is a great venue! Wrigley Field also serves as an amazingly great concert venue and there's more of them each year (hence no need to take the awful trek to Tinley Park). I have mixed feelings on the Metro as each time I go there it makes we wax nostalgic about a great venue in my college town. Reggie's Rock Club is also a nice place to go. Also like the House of Blues here. Other neat venues along Milwaukee avenue as well.
LA is going to have this for the foreseeable future.
