This is different from Census Bureau estimates because this is actual reported data to the IRS.

I only counted MSAs with 300,000+ filed returns. Otherwise, Naples FL was notable at $183k but doesnt have 300,000+ returns.

Good thing those at the top have high incomes...among the most expensive places to live. Makes sense. Not all, but numerous.

That's the art of averages. Average income clearly is a metric that boosts private sector tech-heavy and finance-heavy metros.

Median income is where DC tends to come out on top. Median income is also where you'd find that the top and bottom metros don't have anywhere close to the same disparity.

When I run the math using county numbers...

Collier County FL (Basically Naples FL MSA):
Average Income / Return: $186,474
Average Wage or Salary / Return: $89,563

Just to show how retiree can really skew numbers also.

The worst offender is Teton County WY (Average income / return is $426,603 but wage / return is $103,620).

If you look at just wages / salaries:
1. San Mateo CA $169,895
2. Santa Clara CA $162,102
3. Marin CA $158,607
4. New York NY $146,967
5. San Francisco CA $146,085
6. Falls Church city VA $136,429
7. Fairfield CT $128,686
8. Summit UT $128,000
9. Westchester NY $122,713
10. Williamson TN $121,137
11. Loudoun VA $118,417
12. New Kent VA $118,411
13. Morris NJ $117,531
14. King WA $117,469
15. Somerset NJ $115,306
16. Arlington VA $112,808
17. Norfolk MA $111,118
18. Hunterdon NJ $110,894
19. Alameda CA $109,490
20. Fairfax Co VA $107,588
21. Douglas CO $107,172
22. Contra Costa CA $106,828
23. Middlesex MA $106,604
24. Teton WY $103,620
25. Chester PA $102,927
26. Los Alamos NM $102,747
27. Howard MD $102,684
28. Bergen NJ $99,516
29. Delaware OH $99,280
30. Hamilton IN $99,154

The list starts to resemble the MHI list somewhat...except counties in NYC metro are higher. SF Bay Area still dominates as is NoVA and Boston Metro (and of course NYC).

This has been discussed, but County comparisons across state borders don’t really make sense. Even within State borders in a lot of cases. They’re drastically different in population, size. E.g. Cook County, which includes Chicago, the areas most affluent villages, and the areas most depressed areas. Ditto a place like Middlesex County.

I’m not that surprised. Higher then I’d expect. But Austin is relatively small population wise with many many high paying jobs. Surely, more high paying jobs by raw numbers exist in DFW and Houston. But considering Austin’s much smaller population also makes it have much less of a working class population
