https://startupgenome.com/report/gser2023

This is almost like a reference addendum thread to the VC investment one. Startup Genome compiles the most comprehensive dataset on startup activity (# of deals and total capital, ecosystem value, talent available, # of impactful companies, exit value etc) across the globe and have been doing it for more than 10 years. To me this report is the best indicator of the overall health of an ecosystem, as opposed to a quarterly or even yearly snapshot of just venture capital raised.

Anyway, here's the ranking among North American cities, along with global ranking in brackets:
1. Silicon Valley (1)
2. New York (2)
3. Los Angeles (4)
4. Boston (6)
5. Seattle (10)
6. Washington D.C (11)
7. San Diego (16)
8. Toronto (17)
9. Chicago (19)
10. Miami (23)
11. Austin (25)
12. Philadelphia (27)
13. Denver-Boulder (28)
14. Atlanta (29)
15. Vancouver (30)
16. Salt Lake-Provo (31)
17. Dallas (34)
18. Montreal (40)

Miami's now in the top 10 in NA. I thought Montreal would be a little higher. On the flip side Salt Lake is a pleasant surprise.

Miami is top 10 after two years of record breaking VC growth, but it will slip next year. Miami saw the worst decline in deals YoY (Q1) in all of of North America. Most of their deals lately have also been crypto based, which went belly up. Also, a lot of their ecosystem is overvalued and a few raises are questionable (HQ based elsewhere, but raises counted towards Miami since they had an office there).

Montreal is always low in these rankings cause we never disclose all deals and people don't fully know the ecosystem. Last year we had $2.5B+ in deals but publications showed us at $1.8 to $2.3B. Never mind the talent here, which that on its own is in the same ranks as NYC/SF/TO/Boston. 40th globally is good regardless, but we're easily ranked higher than a lot of cities here, just need more visibility in that regard.

Interesting. Startup Genome uses both Crunchbase and Dealbook. Crunchbase isn't very good anyway at tabulating all possible sources of startup funding. They only look at "traditional" VCs and don't include money from other sources (large institutional investors/loans/credit lines etc), which will typically trump pure VC funding. Dealbook and Pitchbook tend to capture that stuff much better. Will be interesting to see if Montreal's does better in their databases.
