For those of you who are not familiar with Warrenton, VA let me describe it for you: charming historic downtown where you can easily walk to everything you need- restaurants, library, bank, post office, great thrift stores, farmer's market, etc. It has very little crime and a good hospital. The people are well educated and there are ethnic restaurants of almost every variety. It is a pretty place with wonderful views. I am disabled and can not drive so I am looking for a city with similar amenities. Suggestions?
Geneva, Canandaigua, Batavia, Glens Falls, Plattsburgh, Corning, Oneonta and Oswego, among others in Upstate NY. Geneva probably fits the most in terms of demographics and it has a college. It's in the Finger Lakes region.
I forgot to mention that I need close access to medical specialists for myself and my dogs.....must be within 15 minutes of a 24 hour emergency vet and also an internal medicine specialist. I prefer a consistent climate, but it is hard to have it all. I am now in Florida where it is too hot 9 months of the year.
Also, again I am disabled and can not drive so walkability is KEY and availability of cabs would be a plus. Usually I hire someone to drive me to the DR but this has gotten way too expensive as I am traveling one to two hours each way now. So a town like Warrenton where you have an old fashioned downtown main street with your basics would suit me best.

In my neck of the woods I'd say Danville Kentucky. It was our original state capitol and has a large Victorian area, including several buildings built before 1800. It is home to KY's state school for the deaf and Centre College (and thus decent public transit for a town of 18,000 in the Land where Lincoln was born and the Mullet refuses to die)

Chapel Hill/Carrboro, North Carolina. The two towns adjoin one another. Chapel Hill is larger, with a population of 55,000. Carrboro has 20,000. There is no separation between the two so going from one to the other is seamless, even on public transit.
They both have a nice walkable downtown area, loads of great restaurants, an amazing food scene for the population (worthy of numerous national media mentions), very little crime, a world class research/teaching hospital, a well educated population and worthy of note...FREE public transit!

It is so good to hear that Warrenton is still a very charming town. I absolutely enjoyed walking around the downtown area, spent quite a bit of time at the Library there and even attended a year of high school when I lived outside of town. Unfortunately I moved out of state and have not been back there in almost 12 years. I most certainly the landscape surrounding the town.
