Oakland might be the cultural center now. But it is fading fast, and is likely to loose it's status to LA state wide and Stockton for Norcal. Oakland is a west coast version of where Harlem was right before ww2, when the black mecca was about to shift to DC. Her days are numbered and the hey-day (as a black cultural mecca) is long since passed and will continue to pass as Oakland continues to gentrify into an SF suburb.
Exactly. We might as well say RIP to the bay area's Black community. I predict in 50 years there will be close to 0% black population in San Francisco. Once they finish demolishing all the housing projects, that will drive the remainder of the blacks out. Neighborhoods like Sunnydale for example are virtually 100% non-black outside of the projects. Oakland is just as bad as SF though. Yuppies and gentrification will do away with West Oakland's black community, and immigrants will replace them in East Oakland. Add to that the ridiculously high black-on-black murder rate in both cities and the way blacks are killing each other off, no one will want to stick around for much longer.

^The Bay Area has around 500,000 black people, I doubt they'll ever ALL be gone, unless there's nuclear war, an alien invasion, the zombie apocalypse, etc. But yeah, it does look like the Bay's black population will continue to drop for the foreseeable future. Also, LA is losing black people too.

We keep having the same discussion with the same people.

Some continue to hold Oakland and the Bay Area to a stricter standard when it comes to the state of Blacks and I think its due to an anti-Califonia bias based on stereotypes and generalizations, which is incredibly ironic.

Its almost as if they 'look down' on Blacks in the Bay Area? Which is highly ironic considering as an entire group, Blacks in the Bay Area do better financially then Blacks in any of the largest metros except Washington DC.

As far as Blacks moving out of the Bay Area, the 2010 Census confirms that the vast majority who leave the technical borders of the Bay Area are simply moving inland to more affordable places still withing 100 miles of San Francisco.

So basically as of 2010, there are 845,000 Blacks within 100 miles of San Francisco, an increase of 5% over 2000.

Its like theyre saying that Black upward mobility is great elsewhere but its is a bad thing in the Bay Area?

First of all, salaries have nothing to do with quality of life since the cost of living is different in all cities.

Secondly, that's really not that big a number of blacks for a metro of SF's size. Houston and Dallas both have a black metro population of about one million each.

Yawns. 845,000 within 100 miles is substantial for any race.

Furthermore, since the Bay Area has twice as many Asians as Dallas and Houston combined, that just illustrates that every area is going to have greater representations of some groups while other areas have greater representations of other groups.

Is there something wrong with that?

It has the whole gambit of people from black professors to doctors to hipsters to blue collar laborers to artists to small business owners and etc... there's also a huge number of mixed race black people. I've seen everything from black and chinese couples to black and el salvadorean to black and ethnic french... interracial relationships are not only tolerated but accepted here. In my opinion it's about as accepting as it gets for blacks in America barring the terrible relationship with the Oakland Police Department.
will I stand out as a darkskin person ?

When did i say anything was wrong with that? Silly me. For some reason the thread title gave me some crazy idea that this thread was about blacks in the west. Don't be so defensive.

I agree and not only that, but blacks have history and power within the Bay Area. The Bay Area is more in the league of Houston and Dallas and above Seattle or Phoenix.
