To get more accurate answers, this should be in the California forum imo

SB is more affluent and has more of a tourism scene which could affect it's overall safety. Both aren't incredibly crime ridden by any stretch and its safe to assume you'll be fine in either location. I'd personally choose SB if i had the choice, but Davis is a pretty safe city. Educated college down and has very minimal crime at all.

Highlights
Davis is 27.9% less expensive than Santa Barbara.
Davis housing costs are 42.0% less expensive than Santa Barbara housing costs.
Health related expenses are 1.0% more in Davis.

Davis is safer, in both violent and property crime, although Santa Barbara isn't bad either.

Davis gets a lot hotter, though. But not as isolated from a major city as SB is.

I wouldn't call Santa Barbara isolated, but Davis is closer to Sacramento, yes. If you meant SF, Davis is only 20 miles closer than LA-SB.
SB feels very connected to the LA area, even if it's 25 miles away.

I haven't been to Davis to compare the rest. I don't think either has a crime issue.

Are you referring to going to college there? If so I would think Davis would be a lot safer and far less rowdy than Isla Vista.
