All right then. Time out. What direct experience of LA do you have to refute its general walkability (at least, according to its placement in the survey)? After all, be fair: You've been offered examples... And I've been fair by admitting that not all areas are very walkable, haven't I?
Well personally the fact that I had to take a cab or drive whenever I was there. Also, the fact that women there seemed more interested in what I drove or if I drove something. I am a long time native of northern California (SF, Sacramento, Oakland) so this was what I had to compare to then.
I have to admit that I have a lot of love for Oakland but I cannot fathom how it ranked number 12 on the study. As if people meander through East and west Oakland....

I lived in West Oakland, so yeah. I would say it was walkable to the Pac 'n' Save, but that's only because I'm male and really fast on my feet in a pinch.

Lol I cant believe you live in the west. I used to go to the baptist church across the street from the acron projects when I was 12 but was always afraid to walk around.

I was north of Acorn. In a warehouse conversion; I rented. We were caged in, basically.
On topic, it was fine in the daytime for me. Even in the evening it was pretty OK as long as I kept my wits and stayed smart. As to basic "amenities", not much. And well...it was mixed old housing stock/industrial off San Pablo Ave so in the morning, for example, I'd walk up to the bus station and see some guy sitting alone upright in his car. I'd ignore, heels clacking. Then I'd look up again as I approached passing, and suddenly there's a woman sitting in the passenger seat and I'd wonder who-how-where'd she appear from and I didn't see her bef- oh. Got it. I guess that's a neighborhood amenity?
But really, Oakland and LA probably ranked for the same reason. There are great walking areas in Lake Merritt, Chinatown, Temescal...so it evens out. I can see that.
I like how the LA boosters here are trying to convince us that the LA map entitled "Los Angelos airports and freeways" is somehow a map of most of California. This is very amusing.
Funny,LA ranked higher than Denver,Free Chilly D-Town?
