Boston felt like the most vibrant city to me in the east after NYC although admittedly I was never in Phily at night in my stay. My rule of thumb is to critically compare pedestrian activities between 3-5 in the evening when its considered the dead hours and then compare the post 6 in the evening crowds. Boston exceeded my expectations where a place like DC practically shut down, except tourists taking pictures of Congress, the treasury building, and the white house.

San Francisco is my answer for here, its not just the city but the area in general just feels more vibrant thus giving it the "big city" feel over a larger expanse. San Francisco can easily compete with Phily and Boston but those areas have nothing (except the peoples republic of Cambridge) to compete with Oakland, Santa Rosa, San Jose, Daly City, Berkeley, etc IMO

DC shut down? Hmmm, people are on the streets of Chinatown, Georgetown, Eastern Market, U Street, H Street, Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights, Dupont Circle, Foggy Bottom and West End until the wee hours of the morning.

Philadelphia has the most urban feel to me with all the row homes and center city is full of people. The 3rd biggest in the U.S.A.

I would say Philly has more of a big city feel than SF & Boston.

So there are no average suburbs 60 miles outside the central city (Santa Rosa) or any dense inner ring suburbs full of 1950's/60's tract homes that all look the same (Daly City) in Boston or Philly? If so then good for them because they ain't missing much by not having a Santa Rosa or Daly City, haha.
