Let’s say you were offered jobs in these five locations. Relocation (assuming you don’t live there) is paid. Salary pays roughly the same, with the expensive COL pays about 3k more a year in all of them. Assume that regardless of location, roommates would be necessary, since it’s an entry-level position in the government.
Out of these five locations, which one would you most like to live in, and why? Assume all variables, COL, access to nature, metropolitan area amenities, climate, I mean whatever ones you consider.
I’m leaving the poll as multiple choice, if you choose to vote, please comment in order of ranking (would rather live in vs. would rather not live in) and state your reasoning.
I would pick Hollywood,Florida because I would be more likely to find a good church of Christ in Florida than the other states. Also, redfishing in Florida and also I would pick Hollywood because they have whitetail deer hunting in Florida. I thinkAlso, Florida has no state income tax.Bellingham would be second because of no state income tax and its a small city.Seattle would be third because its in Washington State so no income tax.Long Beach would be fourth because its so pretty from the pictures. Ventura would be last because its the least appealing to me.Also, I pick Florida because its more conservative than Washington and California.
A lot of votes for Seattle so far. Though I imagine Seattle on 36k would be a lot harder than Bellingham on 34k. Surprised more people aren’t factoring in the COL.
If COL is actually pretty important, I'd take Bellingham if you earn money in USD and have a Nexus card. Right in the middle of two major cities but quaint quieter smaller city life with car accessibility to Seattle & Vancouver. Otherwise Seattle and Long Beach would be runaway favorites.
Bellingham has a sizable university and good proximity to Seattle and Vancouver including a little bit of Amtrak service. It's a gorgeous location. But not terribly cheap.
I voted for:
1. Hollywood, FL: Great beaches. Urban built environment. Relatively affordable. Right in the Miami metro area.
2. Long Beach, CA: I love LBC, but it's gotten way too expensive now. It used to be the more affordable beach alternative to cities on the Santa Monica Bay. It's still cheaper, but not by much anymore and the price doesn't seem worth it as much. But, it's still right among everything LA has to offer, has some really cool urban areas, and is on the beach. However, the beach can get pretty polluted.
I did not vote for:
3. Ventura, CA: Too removed from the main core of LA. Nice beaches and downtown area, but just too small and secluded.
4. Seattle, WA: Not a fan of the PNW, but it's the actual urban hub of the region with a lot going on downtown.
5. Bellingham, WA: Again, not a fan of the PNW. But also very secluded and way too small.
