New York City: Finance, Media, Entertainment, Tourism, Trade, Technology, Manufacturing, and ports

Texas: Agriculture, Aeronautics, Defense (Military and Defense Contracting), Technology, Energy (Oil, Wind power, etc), Tourism, Transportation, Manufacturing, Entertainment, Tourism, Healthcare, and ports

We currently also one of the, if the not the fastest growing economy in the country.

Why are we comparing just NYC with all of Texas? Per nycrican's request?

If we were to compare the entire states, New York actually has significant agriculture and education (NYC by itself is a significant in terms of education). Both are in the same ballpark (if we're talking about the entire state) when it comes to sheer size and diversity of their economies.

This at least is a fairer comparison. But I think the thread has probably run its course if we've now fallen to discussing why CA is the most talked about state by comparing NYC to Texas.

It has the largest population and largest economy of any state, plus that "Pesky Hollywood"......LOL.....Seriously I think other states get their share...N.Y., PA., N.J., Florida?,Texas to name a few...Plus New York City gets talked about the most for many of the same reasons California does; and many other cities get mentioned too.

New York State's GDP (1,144,481 million for 2008) is just a bit smaller than that of Texas (1,223,511 million for 2008), and New York State is well-established in all sectors (primary, secondary, tertiary, "quaternary") with NYC having a strong hold on the latter two, and the rest of New York doing well with the first two. That's pretty evenly matched in terms of size and diversity.

I actually agree with you, the two states are pretty close. I got the GDP numbers off the net:

California-----1.846 trillion with a population of 36.8 million

Texas--------1.223 trillion with a population of 24.3 million
New York---- 1.144 trillion with a population of 19.5 million

Florida-------- 744 billion with a population of 18.3 million
Illinois---------633 billion with a population of 12.9 million
Pennsylvania---553 billion with a population of 12.5 million

New Jersey-----474 billion with a population of 8.6 million
Ohio-----------471 billion with a population of 11.5 million
North Carolina--400 billion with a population of 9.2 million
Georgia--------396 billion with a population of 9.7 million
