I lived in Westwood for a summer (and visited fairly often), and I lived in East Village for a summer as well. My impression is that Greenwich Village is much more of a real functioning neighborhood than Westwood is due to many, diverse, and accessible shops available and a (eroded) "native" populace. I would probably choose Greenwich Village in the end, though Westwood was fun.

I voted Greenwich Village for the same reasons. UCLA is my alma mater so it always felt transitional, therefore my personal comparison may not be entirely fair. But as much as I really dislike the concrete canyons, I'd rather live somewhere that feels more grounded, since I can only think of Westwood as a college town, impermanent, an upscale depot on my way to somewhere else. In my case, a place more downscale by most popular measures, but hey!
Yeah, do you feel the same way when you visit, 18Montclair? That Westwood doesn't feel like a place to call home? I don't imagine NYU grads feel that way about Greenwich, but then I only know one and we're not speaking so I can't ask...

LOL
Westwood is like a college town in the middle of a really rich part of LA.
I always felt like Westwood was really nice actually..one of the few places I would consider living in LA, at least the North West area...I'm voting Westwood because I could never personally enjoy living anywhere in NYC beyond a few months..I am a Westerner ..Although Westwood is not a favorite neighborhood..Westwood is close enough to the beach in Santa Monica &Third Street Pavillion to be somewhat appealing.

Not sure why that would be different for any college in any big city. I would expect NYU and UCLA grads to feel the same way about the village and Westwood as UW grads would feel about Seattle's University District and BC grads would feel about Chestnut Hill. Why is Westwood any different? It blends in with west L.A. as well as the village blends in with lower Manhattan.
