I've gone from our corporate offices in Chicago down to Brickwell to visit some of our buildings. While it was a nice area, I couldn't help but keep thinking - "where are all the people!?!?!?".., It wasn't bad at all, but when you say "manhattan", I think masses of people and buildings and humanity. Downtown Chicago does it ok during the weekdays in the Loop as far as throngs all over, but Brickwell just didn't have anywhere near the social presence I was expecting given the amount of buildings.
Otherwise, having been to Atlanta I had fun in Midtown, but I don't understand what it possibly has to do with comparisons to Manhattan. Charlotte.......?

Is it possible there is NO "Manhattan of the South"? To me it's no different than calling Minneapolis "the Manhattan of Minnesota" -- it's just not a very good analogy!

Not a good analogy, but it does sort of get across what the OP is getting at.
No, there is no directly analogous place, but Manhattan as a byword for density and highrises communicates pretty easily, no?
