Just curious, how many residents of City of Cleveland are on welfare from the government? Nationally, this number exceeds 100 million (source of this number is not known for now?

2009 me would have said about 3/50. I suspect it's higher than that.

“There are 160,000 people on food stamps in the city of Cleveland alone,” noted Dr. Robert Fischer, the co-director of the Center on Urban Poverty and Community Development at CWRU. - See more at: http://observer.case.edu/food-stamp-....ONqdq21z.dpuf

There are 272,143 residents of Cuyahoga County who currently use food stamps. They represent about 21.6 percent of the total population. - See more at: http://observer.case.edu/food-stamp-....ONqdq21z.dpuf

UNBELIEVABLE!! 1 in 4 persons in the county is on food stamps!!

Compared to what?

That's certainly a high sounding number. And that doesn't even include government workers and councilmen whose entire lives are subsidized, not just food. But how does that compare to other cities?

I would think higher in terms of overall population. But then for example, add the entire MSA or CSA into the mix, and I think things would look quite different. Each city is laid out differently.

I don't live in Cleveland. My GPS took me through local streets of the city street recently. I saw a lot of poverty and that lead to this post. Made me think about the people who live around us. Globalization will make this much worse in the coming years.

"54 percent-- live in poverty, the second highest rate of any big city nationally"

I mean that, literally, all of their income comes from tax payers. At least food stamps only buys people food, not expensive cars, houses, etc.

Look at all the money going to Medicare. That's a far bigger expenditure with plenty of elephant-in-the-room issues
