Going to be grabbing dinner in Cleveland. Any must see restaurants in Cleveland? Not necessarily expensive or elegant, just something interesting or unique to the city

In addition to those, there is the world-famous Slyman's corned beef.

If downtown, check out the East 4th St., Gateway, etc., discussions here, or the Warehouse District.

Cleveland: Dining Overview - TripAdvisor

Lola Bistro and Greenhouse Tavern are both the flagship restaurants of James Beard award-winning chefs, specializing in mod ethnic cuisines. Greenhouse Tavern is more casual.

Barrio Gateway is a casual favorite. Stonetown, Taza, Pura Vida, Flaming Ice Cube, and Hodges demonstrate Cleveland's diverse culinary offerings. Nauti Mermaid offers lake perch and walleye, regional specialties. You also could dine on the river in the East Flats at the brand new Alley Cat.

Ohio City can be easily reached from Tower City using the Red Line rail rapid. Perhaps check out the West Side Market, Crop, Nate's Deli, SOHO (U.S. southern food), and Mitchell's Ice Cream.

Shaker Square also can be reached from Tower City on the Green or Blue rail lines. Balaton there is likely the best Hungarian restaurant in Ohio, and a real treat if you like Germanic ethnic food, e.g., great Wienerschnitzel and spaetzle among other favorites there. Cleveland once had the largest Hungarian-speaking population outside of Hungary. Fire is a top-rated restaurant on Shaker Square and known as one of the top locavore restaurants in the U.S.

IMO, the Balaton's food is much better than Sterle's or even the very popular Das Schnitzel Haus in Parma, and certainly the new Hofbrau Haus downtown.

I'm just picking up my fiancee from the Cleveland airport and then we're heading to sandusky.

I wanted to get there early and walk downtown and maybe grab something to eat before I get her

The airport is connected to downtown by the Red Line rail rapid, with the station near luggage pick-up. The downtown rail mass transit hub is in Tower City, which is a short walk from East 4th St. and the Warehouse District.

Zoom in here.

If you buy the $5 RTA daily pass, you also could get off at the West 25th St. station and explore the Market District, especially the famed West Side Market, if open on the day of your visit (read about it in the Dining Travel article linked in post 4). Perhaps have a famed Steve's Gyro, possibly long line, and eat in it in the balcony above the market or in the pocket park across the street. You probably also could take your sandwich to the adjacent Market Garden Brewery or Great Lakes Brewery (less than a block away) and buy a great beer to complement the gyro.

You also could transfer to the Waterfront Line at Tower City and take it to the East Flats station, if Alley Cat has opened for lunch by the time of your visit.

At Tower City, you also could transfer to the Blue or Green rail rapids and head to Shaker Square for the Balaton or Fire, as mentioned earlier.

Shaker Square Restaurant Directory

RTA doesn't have free transfers, so the daily pass is advisable if you're going to explore Cleveland.

You also could stay on the Red Line and take it to the new Little Italy/University Circle rail rapid station. Walk up Mayfield Road, and check out the likes of Mia Bella, Trattoria or Presti's (especially good for desserts). Mia Bella is a top 10 Cleveland restaurant as rated by TA reviewers and reasonably priced.

Obviously, be careful with your time, but your girlfriend perhaps could meet you downtown and you could explore together before heading to Cedar Point. Little Italy would be a romantic place for a meal before hitting the coasters. The Balaton also is very romantic.

Alternatively, stop at Berardi's in Huron for good lake perch.

There's also a popular Berardi's in Sandusky, run by a different branch of the family but with a very similar menu.

Also take Route 2 (it's a freeway) and not the Ohio Turnpike to Sandusky. There are no tolls and it's a more interesting drive.

Enjoy Ohio's North Coast!
