And the metropolitan counties surrounding Detroit continue to thwart any kind of serious regional mass transit time and time again ... suburbanites are content with no rail transit... they will contend with crowded freeways to get in and out of downtown, while still allowing them to come in for various entertainment when the mood hits them... like going to a orchestra or rock concert, or maybe a Lions or Tigers and, now, Pistons game. Thankfully even Detroit is changing for the better with more younger and whiter populations re-populating downtown and some close-in neighborhoods, like suddenly thriving Midtown... But the effects of the "Doughnut City" remain and are tough nuts to crack.
A whole lot of this applies to Cleveland as well.

Yes it does. Cleveland's new pretty downtown/certain neighborhoods' face can't mask the city's many warts.

Republicans would be smart to be transit-friendly, healthcare-friendly, education-friendly, 1st-amendment-friendly, eco-friendly, minority-friendly, disability-friendly, female-friendly, poor-friendly....

Most of those are more or less subjective...a republican could and would argue that they are those things. I think it's pretty objective to say that republicans are not transit friendly, though.

Great post. Agree wholeheartedly. This site can get too "rose-colored" sometimes. (sorry folks)

And the flip side, this site can get too brutal or defensive.

IMO I think it can get "rose-colored" as you put it is because some people don't want to look at the cons only the pros. Also, other feel they get tired of people pointed their fingers at their city by everybody and their mother and always making them out to to be the poster child for what's wrong with America or the Black Sheep of America. I guess that why I can be defensive when it comes to Cleveland sometimes.
