Looking to buy property in one of several coastal areas in NC, and have narrowed it down to Topsail Beach, Kure Beach or Oak Island/Holden Beach. I’ve been to the first two and haven’t noticed too many winged pests when I was there, but then again I’m not sure I was there for peak bug season. I’m going to visit Oak Island soon, but again, probably won’t be peak bug season so I won’t be able to determine how bad it gets. I have noticed more screened porches with Oak Island homes, which could be a clue. Anyway, any insight appreciated, and if you know of the least buggy areas in Coastal NC, please share!

The least buggy area is the Outer Banks because of the winds. Look for the least marshy area and one exposed to wind.

I know the area has a lot of palmetto bugs.

There are too many micro-variables to make macro distinctions between different areas like that. At a macro level, there's no difference. Within each town/area there are micro differences that affect the amount of bugs...wind direction, rain, presence of standing water, spraying, etc., etc.

If I were buying, I would look first at Kure Beach. It has open ocean on one side and a flowing river on the other, not marshes.
