Edenton has a hospital, connected with Vidant Pitt in Greenville. Many specialists make rounds to the area, but it is not uncommon to travel for more major procedures. Chowan County is surrounded by water, with the Chowan River to the west, Albemarle Sound to the south, and Yeopim River to the East. All fresh water, but most of the public access is for boats and kayaks.

Thanks for the information about Edenton and Southport. They are definitely on our short list of places to look into now. I did actually find a few homes under 200K in Manteo. One was a renovated older cottage (lots of charm!) and the others were new in a subdivision called Cedar Bay I believe. Does anyone have any information on that area/subdivision in Manteo? I can't wait to take a road trip and look more closely at these locations in person. Thanks for the advice and thoughts thus far!

If you're interested in Manteo - which has a charming downtown area, I'd suggest you check out this discussion forum on another website: OBX Connection Outer Banks Message Board | OBX Connection Forum 99% of the people are very helpful, as they are here and there are a number who live in Manteo.

On that site - http://www.obxconnection you'll see other options to click on besides the message board. That said - be sure to check out the "search" function (though it is not as good as City-data's to look for information that has already been posted).

My next suggestion is that you begin visiting any of these areas in different seasons to see what they're like. We've been regular summer visitors to Hatteras Island, NC for about 30 years, however we began visiting well off season - as in Feb/March to check things out and find Manteo to be quite nice.

Best wishes!

P.S. I've asked about medical care on the site and know a few locals... The Outer Banks Hospital offers a fair amount and seems to be growing...there are, I believe, two "walk in" sorts of clinics that are supposed to be pretty good. At this point I do know that depending upon one's needs some do go to Elizabeth City, Norfolk or Greenville for specialist care.
