Hi - We are looking to relocate, retire and downsize from our house in the Charlotte area to the NC coast. Can anyone give us advice and experience in the communities between Leland and Shalotte? We don't want to live in a huge development with SFH, TH and condos that share a common pool and clubhouse. Would prefer a smaller single family home community with a pool, away from the beach hubbub. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
If you are willing to look a little further south into OIB and Calabash there is Sunset Ridge (a smallish community with a pool) or the communities in the town of Carolina Shores. Both of these areas are close to Ocean Isle Beach and Sunset Beach.
We moved to a new home in Calabash Lakes in Carolina Shores in May. The community offers single family, paired ranches or townhomes...with clubhouse and large pool. We're two miles from Calabash and just minutes to Sunset and Ocean Isle beaches.
I've heard of Calabash Lakes but was concerned about the community being too large and too close to the Myrtle Beach mayhem. We are retiring and looking for a quiet place that isn't crowded. What is your take on Calabash?

Calabash Lakes is a fairly big community, but it's very quiet and the homes are spaced very nice. Out here it's totally different from North Myrtle and Myrtle. You would never know its only twenty minutes away. We spend a lot of our time in the Cherry Grove section of North Myrtle where we have a small beach cottage, but it's always nice to get back to Carolina Shores. The town Calabash is small...mostly restaurants and shops and a few thrift stores. The area is starting to take off again.
Southport is really nice. BC1960 knows the area well. Brunswick Forest in Leland is a very large development in Leland...but nice. Compass Point in the Leland-Bolivia area is worth checking out too.
Do you know of any other communities that flood? Good to know!
