I am relocating to Jacksonville/Havelock area and need to find a home for rent. No one will rent to me since I have a German Shephard. He is a good dog and I am a responsible owner. I will be in the area in 30 days and need some help. If someone can refer me to a property or know of a property for rent I could really use some help.
Thanks

Oh, I feel for you! I was in a similar position. Maybe consider placing an ad yourself, either in the local paper there or on craigslist. Also, you could try contacting realtors - they may know of someone who is looking for someone to rent their house. As hard as it is, just be up front about the type of dog you have. You may run into someone who is a german shepard lover!

Good luck and keep me posted!

Default Speaking as a landlord who is dog crazy....

My husband and I have rental properties and advertise usually as either NO PETS or SMALL DOGS ONLY.

We absolutely positively will not rent to anyone with cats. Don't even try talking us into a cat!!! I love them tremendously, but know first hand the destructive nature of cat urine!!

Dogs however are a different story. We will bend on the dog rules if the prospective tenant is upfront and persuasive in advocating for their pet. Puppy? NO WAY (again, first hand eperience with the chewing and Potty accidents).

Big dog who is older, house trained, crated while mom/dad is away - we could be persuaded. Key is how you sell yourself and your pet.

Offer to pay a pet deposit and $20-25 extra rent per month. Offer to let the landlord meet your pet and make periodic inspections after you move in. Let the landlord know that your pet is treated on schedule to keep fleas away, and that you pick up after your dog.

Small landlords, like my husband and me, fear having expensive damages that we can ill afford. Someone who is apparently sensitive to our worries and willing to go to extra steps and expense upfront to diffuse the fear of possible damages, scores major points with us.
Apartment complexes usually won't be too flexible about pet size, but my son rented an apartment off of New Centre Dr. and I know some tenants had huge dogs. Can't remember the name of the complex though.

Talking Thanks!!!

Good news.......after much looking and a lot of stress we found a home!!! Just like what was suggested above we found something on craigslist and he was soooooo easy going about the dog. We instantly clicked on the phone and he felt good about the situation. Whew......thought I was going to be homeless! It is true to campaign for your dog!!! It helped that I was a previous home owner, he is crate trained, not a puppy and was very upfront and truthful. Thanks for the help!!!!

I will not rent to anyone with kids. Pets are much cleaner. Kids...well they crap and urinate all over the place...track in mud and everything else...draw on the walls with crayons and spill thier food and drinks all over. Then if that isn't enough...they bring their friends over to do all of these things in stereo. If someone wants to rent from me with kids...I say I will get back with you and they never see or hear from me again. If they have pets...especially dogs...we can do business.

this is why most landlords are going straight to the hell basket . They want to charge an arm an a leg but don't expect to bend a bit. I always think it takes a real a-hole to want to be a landlord. I believe there should be a law against refusing to rent based on if you have kids or pets. Charge a (refundable)fee idiots! and if they tear up the place.. keep the fee/!!! duhh (Landlords need to be regulated much much more)

Pass all the laws you want...I will get around it. File a lawsuit...I will ride it out. Like I said...I see you have kids you never see or hear from me again. You got house trained dogs...we are in business. There are housing projects for the kids...better for all of us. Cheaper for the kids and most likely their single moms with lots of other fatherless children around to play with and better for me...less damage. Oh yea...I always get a monthly fee and have never given a refund.

Default Now it's my turn!

I read with interest this post as I too am looking to relocate to Jacksonville, NC and just heard from a realtor that it's a NC state law that landlords cannot rent to you if you have one of the 7 dangerous dogs...i.e. german shepard. Is this actually the case because I too have a shepard and have never heard of anything quite so crazy. Also, tried looking for a craigslist post, as someone suggested, but cannot seem to find Jacksonville as a listed area. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!
