That's true, but it implies lack of formal education. When in reality most extremely successful people don't have a formal education, many do get honorary degrees though.

This is not really true. Most financially well off people have a college degree or higher. Sure, there will always be exceptions, but not that many.
If you don't have the education, you have to make up for it in guts/ability to tolerate a lot of risk and a lot of failures until you get successful.
I agree. When one has been out of school for months, years, or DECADES even, getting into the swing of school can be a daunting challenge. Whereas if one is fresh out of high school, he/she may still remember things they'll need for college and will still be in the swing of school.
I don't think the biggest barriers for older college students are the academics. For most, I think it's the fact that kids / work / bills are in the picture.

I Started taking classes again when I was, I think, 26. Much easier the second time around but I don't have kids. I brought my GPA up from 1.0 to near a 3.0 in a few years even while working full time.
It was hard getting over the mental barrier of thinking I was too old to be going back to school but I found I actually pick many things up a lot faster than I did in my early 20's, more experience maybe.

Yes, I think it's a lot easier when kids aren't in the picture. Makes it a lot easier.
I agree with what you said about being older, too. I think I'd be better at subjects like math & chemistry than I was in high school. As an adult, you understand the context of things better than when you're in HS or college.
