I am about to start attending college and am really trying to determine what major i should persue. I find Economics very interesting but If a finance degree will make me much more marketable I would rather go with it. I intend to get a masters, and would like to work with something involving the stock market. any comments or advice is appreciated.

Either degree would be fine as the financial market employs both. My take is that a Finance degree is more marketable because an Economics degree almost requires that you get an advanced degree in order to get a job.

I think either one will be great but I really had to choose one, I'd pick Finance.
Just the other day I saw a list of the top 10 College Majors and both Finance and Economics were on the list.
Good luck!

Finance.

Try to minor in Economics.

Or double major. <<< Really differentiate yourself from all of the college grads.

They're both helpful, but for stock markets I'd do Finance. Really, you can go either way. I majored in econ and don't do anything financial (but, I don't really like financial stuff anyway), but my roommate double majored in econ/business and does all financial stuff since she's the only one in her office who knows how to read statements.

If you can do a minor or double major, you'd really be set.

do what I did - major in both

if I had to pick one of the two though - definitely finance, especially if you want to work in the markets - i interned with a derivatives firm and found my finance classwork 100% more valuable than my economics studies

i liked the economics studies because it is of interest to me and also because it shapes how you look at all studies - forces you to look at things a little bit differently

Finance has mor edirect application to the job market. I've had more than a few business majors regret not majoring in accounting or finance. Otherwise they were limited to sales positions.

Nobody in the finance industry is hiring any more. Have you not read the papers lately?

There are too many finance majors and too few jobs.
