The IB program is comparable to the AP program in the states. In fact, good scores on the IB exam will often translate into college credit for the student.

Universities like the IB and AP programs, because the level of knowledge a student is expected to have is a known quantity. With thousands of schools across the US, it is impossible to compare a grade from one school in a class to the grade from another school for the same class. IB/AP have rigorous common curriculum standards and the test is the same across the world. A college can use that to assess and compare students.
