Does anyone have any experience with study abroad programs? I'm looking at a program that will take me to Xi'an China which will not only help me fulfill my language and "cultural" requirements for my major, but it's also a study program I actually find fascinating. However it is rather pricey and while I can absorb the cost if I don't go crazy with money, it's not an amount I can just throw down lightly. Who has done study abroad before, was it worth the money?
For career, school etc; no, not worth the price. I find the price more than if I just went on my own; plus going on your own does not confine you to one area or program.
For experience; up to you if it is worth it, but yes, it is worth it generally as it can be a great experience. If you can afford it, you should do it. But if it is going to put you in a financial crunch, you should just go take a trip abroad on your own, much less in cost.
I don't know if you are talking about a long term program or just 1 semester or year, but our granddaughter did a program for 1 year. She did get some financial help from the university, but most of the costs were picked up by her parents and yes, it was worth it, just for the experience. I don't think it helped her in her career, which isn't the only thing to consider.
Yes, it will open their eyes to the world and teach them things they cant learn in a book. It isnt always expensive either. My school had programs where you paid regular tuition to study abroad.

Sounds like you are getting the 'School quote' via RICH USA $$. Look into managing your own housing, transport, and tuition. I work in China (and much of Asia). If you live / eat / educate / entertain like a local it is DIRT cheap (usually).
Your school is getting (or CHARGING) an 'upcharge' (not uncommon in China, but NOT required to 'Study' overseas.)
I know many who do international study it MUCH less expensive than living in USA.
My MBA program wanted to REQUIRE participation in a $10k 3 week trip... I can fly there for under $800 RT and stay for $10 / day and eat for $5/day, so WHERE was the $$ going? I can do w/o the 'fluff'.
Your EDU will be FAR more valuable if done as a 'local' rather than a 'tourist'. Spend a yr. A few weeks or single term does not 'Stretch' you enough. (EZ to 'Endure' if you know you are leaving.)... better to GROW through the 'challenges' of having to stay through the PAIN. It is never EASY and often not FUN, but the edu value is great.
