One thing that really shocks me when I take an occasional college class for my professional development is how few people are paying any attention to the Instructor/Professor in class. Most of them are staring at their Smartphone while the teacher is lecturing or discussing the issue with a small number of students who are interested.
What is your Professors rules regarding Smartphone use in class?
A lot of my professors don't like the phones but won't say anything about the computer. Personally, I use my computer everywhere for everything. So I text from there too but that doesn't mean I am not listening, as k will always participate and ask questions. My grades reflect my understanding, I use the computer because I always have 1000 things to do and I do them when I can.
A lot of us have an e- book so tablets and laptops are fine as long as the professor doesn't think you're doing anything else on them. wifi here sucks anyway so there is no fear of surfing the internet. Texting is a big no no in all classes.
I've been a professor for 7 years now, and I allow students to use phones and tablets and computers in class when I tell them it's allowed; it actually helps when it comes to things like in-class research for group projects, and students do take notes on them. If I notice a student is not paying attention mostly because of their phone, I'll call on them -- over and over -- until this habit is broken. :-) I'll also say "tough luck" to students who ask me questions about things we discussed in class because I know they missed it due to being on their phone. If a student has to take a call for an emergency, I ask them to let me know and step outside. I also walk around the room a lot and am usually very aware of what they are up to. Keep class active and there's little chance for them to text.
Yes, people do it. And the professor could care less. He can and will fail them without hesitation. Don't think professors don't notice who paid attention and who pissed off come finals time. I routinely tutor "second-timers" -- people who fail and have to take a class over again.
Don't expect sympathy if the only thing the professors sees everyday is your head buried in the cell phone.
I work in a different type of institution (military). My students are not allowed to have cell phones out during instruction.
I personally think it is rude. But at the end of the day students will only get out of the course what they put into it. You want to come to class and facebook for an hour. Go right ahead. Your $$$$ wasted.
