Does anyone here have Dyslexia or a learning disability (parents of children also) that is in University? How does one deal with it? I am a Chemical Engineering Major and I have a strong interest in science. I don't know if I am speaking out of anger but I am starting to feel like college is not for me. I study constantly, staying up until 4 or 5 a.m. in the morning; yet I still do less than average on tests. How can I cope with my disability better? I really hate to give up

One of the best Internal Medicine Drs I ever worked with was dyslexic. He got through all of medical school and most of college by his wife reading the books and assignments to him. Tests were a challenge but he did it.
Good luck!!

Do you have a 504 plan or an IEP in place? Just as in grades K-12, college students with one of them qualify for accommodations. You can ask to be tested if you don't, it costs approx $500, which sounds like a lot, but not when compared to the value of a college education.

Someone I know was a very slow reader (I'm not sure her official diagnosis). Her university had a service where all of her textbooks were put on tape so she could listen to them or listen to them while she was reading them. She also could take all of her tests in a quiet area, plus have additional time to take exams.

+1

This will be the first place to check with. They will aid with coping, and they will likely provide you with testing accommodations.
