Both schools are basically the same, except that SU is a private school. With that said, the Syracuse tuition is double the out of state tuition for the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and Iowa State. A lot happened from my last thread and I am considering applying to Iowa State and Minnesota because my second visits to Syracuse didn't really go well.

Given your handle, I don't think you'd like Iowa too much.

I've never been to Minneapolis, but I've heard it's a fun town with lots to do. I have been to Syracuse, and there's not lots to do there. The school is good though.

Keep in mind, I believe there is a plan to raise out-of-state tuition at the U of M to the Big 10 average. It is currently among the lowest in the conference.

I'll vote for my alma mater anyway.

What is your intended major? Iowa State has fantastic engineering programs, Minnesota is excellent for business and biological sciences, and Syracuse is where you want to be for communications-related programs (Newhouse).

Location alone, I love the Twin Cities- tons to do, great opportunities for internships/networking, always ranked in those "best places to live" articles. Syracuse is more gritty, and Ames, IA is small town surrounded by corn fields- not that that's a bad thing, per se, but some people might not like that, just like some people don't want to go to school right in a big city like U of MN.

Also, Syracuse is a solid school but if you have to take out lots of $$$, not sure it's worth it. I'd go with Minnesota or ISU in that case.

Plenty of Bernies in Ames - it's a university town, after all. Not conservative at all. I clicked on ISU in your poll because there was just a thread on the Iowa forum about which Iowa university had the best computer science program, and ISU won hands down.

But, what kind of lifestyle do you want?

U of M Twin Cities is HUGE HUGE HUGE ( about 50,000 students) and URBAN URBAN URBAN - MN/St.Paul urban metropolitan area is about three million people. Cost of living there is high.

Ames is a small university city (student population of about 36,000, city population total about 62,000) within easy driving distance of Des Moines.

I don't know deedly about Syracuse as a place, except that the University is very well respected.

So, are you in the mood for a very urban experience? Or is a small university city right for you right now?
